🔥 Who Is Interviewing on the Spot

This is the part worth circling. According to the city's pre-registration posting, hiring managers will interview at the fair for case management clinicians, LPNs and RNs, electrical, plumbing, carpentry and paint positions, custodial staff, waste management operators, CDL drivers, motor equipment operators, maintenance workers and dredge operators.

Dredge operators, yes. A city wrapped around Rudee Inlet, Lynnhaven and the back bays keeps its channels open, and somebody runs that equipment.

The Departments in the Room

The city's pre-registration posting lists the Convention & Visitors Bureau, Elections Office, Emergency Communications & Citizen Services, Facilities, Fire, Human Resources, Human Services, Information Technology, Libraries, Parks & Recreation, Planning, Police, Public Utilities, Public Works and the Sheriff's Office.

That spread matters if you are not in the trades. The city's announcement names openings in nursing, engineering, public safety, paraprofessional and operational roles. Police and Fire are not on the on-the-spot interview list, so treat those tables as a chance to ask about the next step rather than expecting an interview that afternoon.

💪 Why a City Job Is Worth the Afternoon

The city is pitching a full benefits package: health, dental and vision coverage, tuition reimbursement, CDL training and hiring bonuses for certain positions. It has not published pay rates or bonus amounts, so ask each department what the position starts at.

Coming off a summer of seasonal work on Atlantic Avenue? The appeal is year-round hours that do not depend on beach weather, and the CDL training is worth asking about if you want to drive but hold no license yet.

📋 How to Show Up Ready

  • Pre-register through the city's posting if you can. It is optional, but it puts your name in the system before you walk in.
  • Bring several printed resumes with real dates, plus a photo ID.
  • Bring copies of any license or certification you hold: nursing license, CDL, trade cards.
  • Come early if you want an on-the-spot interview. The after-work hours will likely be the busiest.
  • Head to the Convention Center's second floor, where the fair is set up.

Can't Make It Tuesday?

The city runs a virtual Q&A every Thursday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. for job seekers with questions about openings and the hiring process. Different format, same employer. If you would rather interview for a transit job, the Hampton Roads Transit career fair on October 16 in Norfolk is a separate event with walk-in interviews for bus operators and mechanics.
