VIRGINIA BEACH, VA — The Oceanfront has gone quiet, the last of the summer seasonal work has wrapped up, and a lot of people who spent June through August on Atlantic Avenue are now looking for something that lasts past Labor Day. Good timing. The fall hiring calendar across Hampton Roads is thicker than the summer one was, and most of it sits a short drive up I-264.

Six hiring events are on the Hampton Roads calendar between October 1 and December 9, 2026, and every one of them is within commuting distance of Virginia Beach. Three are open-interview sessions where you can walk out with a contingent offer the same day.

One thing to be straight about up front: none of these six are happening inside Virginia Beach city limits. The City of Virginia Beach has not posted a fall 2026 career fair to its events calendar, and the career fair page still on its site describes an event from a prior year. So this guide covers the metro. Norfolk is fifteen minutes from Witchduck Road and the jobs on offer are the kind Beach residents take.

ODU Fall Health and Human Services Fair — Thursday, October 1

11:00 AM – 2:00 PM | Webb Student Center, North and Central Cafe, Old Dominion University, Norfolk

Health systems, clinics and human services agencies from across the region set up in the Webb Center for three hours. This is the one to aim at if you are finishing a nursing, social work, public health or human services program, or if you already hold a credential and want to talk to a hiring manager instead of a portal. Read the eligibility line carefully: this is an ODU fair, open to ODU students, alumni, faculty, staff and the campus community. If you graduated from ODU ten years ago and live in Kempsville, you count. If you have no ODU connection, you do not. Registration runs through ODU's Handshake listing.

Hampton Roads Transit Career Fair — Friday, October 16

10:00 AM – 2:00 PM | 509 E. 18th St., Building 4, Norfolk, VA 23504

This is the strongest event on the fall list for someone who needs a paycheck rather than a pipeline. HRT runs open interviews at these fairs and says candidates can leave with a contingent offer in hand. They are recruiting full-time and part-time bus operator trainees and full-time mechanics. At HRT's September session the agency posted $23.00 an hour for bus operator trainees, full-time and part-time alike, and $28.04 an hour for Mechanic III; HRT has not published rates specific to the October date, so treat those as the recent benchmark rather than a guarantee. Part-time operator applicants need a CDL with passenger endorsement and air brakes already in hand. Full-time trainees do not — HRT will enroll you in its CDL permit preparation course and pay you through training. Benefits include medical, dental and vision, a pension, and childcare reimbursement. ODU Fall Career & Internship Fair — Thursday, October 22

11:00 AM – 3:00 PM | Chartway Arena, Old Dominion University, Norfolk

The big one on the ODU calendar, and it fills the arena floor rather than a cafeteria. All majors, full-time roles and internships both, plus free professional headshots on site — worth the trip on its own if your LinkedIn photo is a cropped wedding picture. Same eligibility rule as October 1: students, alumni, faculty, staff and campus community, registered through Handshake. Alumni, this is the cheapest recruiting room you will ever walk into. RecruitMilitary brings employers onto the base for a four-hour in-person fair aimed at veterans, transitioning service members, military spouses, and Guard and Reserve members. It is free for that audience and registration is required. Read the access note twice before you plan your day: you are responsible for getting yourself onto Naval Station Norfolk, and RecruitMilitary does not sponsor anyone through the gate. Hampton Roads Transit Career Fair — Friday, November 13

Same format, same building, six weeks later. If October 16 falls on a workday you cannot move, this is your second swing at the same jobs. Transit hiring does not dry up in the fall the way retail and hospitality hiring spikes and collapses, which is part of what makes these sessions worth putting on the calendar. Come with your driving record and any CDL documentation you already hold.

Hampton Roads Transit Career Fair — Wednesday, December 9

The last posted event of 2026, and a midweek one, which usually means shorter lines than the Friday sessions. December is a smart month to interview for a January start: HRT's operator pipeline runs through a training class, so the offer you take in December turns into a paycheck well before spring.

⚠️ Read This Before You Drive Over

Half of this list is gated. That is not a knock on the events, but showing up to a closed door after crossing a tunnel is a bad afternoon.

  • October 1 and October 22 are ODU events. Students, alumni, faculty, staff and campus community only. No general public walk-ups.
  • October 29 requires base access. Military ID or CAC. RecruitMilitary will not sponsor you onto Naval Station Norfolk, and the gate will not make an exception because you registered online.
  • The three HRT fairs are the open ones. No eligibility screen, no registration, walk in.
  • HRT's jobs are based in Norfolk and Hampton, not Virginia Beach. Factor the commute before you accept.

🔎 How to Pick the Right Ones

  • Need income fast, no degree required: the HRT fairs on October 16, November 13 or December 9. Open interviews and same-day contingent offers are rare and these are them.
  • Hold a CDL already: any HRT date. The passenger endorsement and air brakes are what unlock the part-time operator roles.
  • Veterans and military spouses: October 29 at Naval Station Norfolk, and the HRT fairs as a backup — HRT calls itself veteran-friendly and does not gate its sessions.
  • Health care and human services: October 1 at ODU, if you have an ODU affiliation. If you do not, work the hospital career pages directly.
  • Students and recent grads in any field: October 22 at Chartway Arena is the deepest employer room of the fall.

📋 What to Bring to Any of Them

  • Ten printed resumes. Assume no wifi and no phone signal indoors.
  • A photo ID, and for the October 29 fair, your military ID or CAC.
  • Your driving record and CDL paperwork if you are talking to HRT.
  • Certifications and licenses in a folder, not on your phone.
  • Business casual at minimum. HRT specifically recommends professional attire and asks that children not come along.
  • A short answer to "tell me about yourself" that lasts under a minute.

Not this fall. All six are in Norfolk. The City of Virginia Beach has not posted a fall 2026 career fair, and no other public hiring event inside city limits cleared verification for October through December. Watch the city's careers page if you want the municipal fair when it returns.

Do I need to register for the Hampton Roads Transit career fairs?

No. HRT runs these as walk-in open-interview sessions. Show up inside the 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. window with your documents and expect to interview that day.

Can I get hired on the spot?
